WAIMEA — Jack Machorek and Zachary Safford of Kauai High School each picked up three state qualifying swims to lead the opening meet of the Kauai Interscholastic Federation swim Saturday at the Waimea High School pool.
Both swimmers are from the Kauai High School swim team which is under the coaching of Kelsey Tanaka, a new face in the KIF field. In addition to the two boys, Kauai High School also placed Kaira Kaahihue in the state qualifying circle after Kaaihue finished the 500 freestyle by stopping the clock at 5 minutes, 46.32 seconds.
Machorek and Safford, in addition to their individual qualifying times, also helped pilot the boys 200 medley and boys 400 freestyle relay teams to state qualifying swims, the boys medley relay team capturing first place on a 1:51.02 swim and the 400 freestyle team on the podium for gold with a 3:40.30 swim.
Machorek, Dutch Fairbanks, Safford and Saber Fairbanks made up the boys 200 medley team. Saber Fairbanks, Machorek, Luke Roberts and Safford made up the boys 400 freestyle team.
Machorek pocketed state qualifying swims for the 200 individual medley (2:05.57), the 100 fly (57.46) and the 500 free (5:08.06) while Safford made his marks in the 200 IM (2:09.70), the 100 fly (57.45) and the 500 free (5:20.16).
Following the Red Raider swimmers, Akira Williams of the Island School team pocketed a trio of state swims in the 200 IM (2:06.28), the 100 free (51.00), and the 100 back (1:01.05). Jackson Evans earned a state standard in the 50 free (23.03). Both Voyager men were also on the boys 200 medley relay team which also earned a state berth with its second-place finish at 1:55.47.
Carolyn Price, Mao Fukada, Athena Alexander and Sterling Bird made up the Voyager girls 200 medley relay squad which also found a state time at 2:10.71 with its second-place finish.
Kapaa High School rounded out the state qualifying swims with times in the girls 200 medley, the girls 200 freestyle, the boys 200 medley, and the boys 400 freestyle relay teams.
Grace Stokes, Heather Faretta, Alana Tamashiro and Lily Stokes made up the girls 200 medley squad (2:10.53) who touched first. Lily Stokes, Tori Hinkel, Faretta and Grace Stokes swam the girls 200 freestyle relay (1:52.83) to a first finish at the opening meet.
Justin White, Pakela Panui, Marcus Robinson and Mikala Souza-DeBlake made up the boys 200 medley relay team which finished third on a 1:56.37 for a state qualifying swim. Robinson, White, Mikala Souza-DeBlake and Makua Souza DeBlake made up the boys 400 freestyle relay team who touched second on a 3:51.45 swim for a state time.
Waimea High School, with just three freshmen girls present on the opening swim, did not capture any state times. Sara Funtanilla showed the Menehune’s best effort on the opening meet with a sixth-place finish in the girls 100 butterfly, touching the wall at 1:23.65.
The KIF swim meet moves to the Kapaa High School pool Saturday with the horn sounding for the first event at 10 a.m.
