LIHUE —Derrick Ching shouted loudly when he saw Drew Carrey announce that his niece had just won her showcase on the hit CBS show “The Price is Right.”
And by just $315, no less.
“She won,” he remembers saying Wednesday when he watched the live airing of the episode, which was recorded one month ago. “Big showcase winner.”
His niece, Chelsie Kawamura, won her showcase by guessing $26,000.
The actual retail price?
$26,315.
Kawamura won a trip for two to Spain, two motorcycles and some Gucci handbags.
Altogether, her prizes from the entire day totaled more than $35,000, said Colette Kawamura, Chelsie’s mother, who went to LA to celebrate her 42nd wedding anniversary and her 60th birthday.
Chelsie’s uncle recorded the airing with his phone, so he could share it with his friends and family. Everyone can be heard screaming and shouting in the video.
“The odds of winning are pretty low and the odds of winning and being from Kauai, even lower,” he said.
He had to wait an entire month to find out if his neice had won.
It was almost like torture, he said. Almost.
“She has a pool table she won, too and she doesn’t play pool,” Ching said. “I want to buy it from her.”
Chelsie Kawamura is the second person from Kauai to win “The Price is Right” in the past six months. The other is Katie Vercilli of Kapaa.
