On Christmas Eve, many boys and girls will fall asleep dreaming of gifts that await them under a tree Christmas morning.
Others are not so fortunate.
They know they won’t have anything to open. But we can change that.
Jo-Jo is a 13-year-old boy who recently begun to have anger management issues after his mother moved him and his younger brothers from an abusive relationship. He attends school regularly, but has difficulties maintaining grades. He loves to spend time outdoors and would love some after-school clothing and beach gear, including a Hydroflask, towel and slippers.
Liz and her family have been struggling with homelessness off and on for years, exposing Liz to drug use and witnessing many fights as well as other violence. They recently moved to their own home and she is working on her college application. She could use some gas cards so she can continue to attend school as well as school clothes and supplies.
Frank is a boy who experiences PTSD symptoms as a result of being exposed to verbal and emotional abuse between his parents. He is 19 years old and loves playing with action figures like Transformers and Ninja Turtles. He also likes board games.
Sarah is a 15-year-old girl who has had a history of abuse at the hands of her mother, though she now lives with a foster family. As a result, she experiences episodes of depression that make functioning in school and at home difficult. She loves to draw and journal, and would love some art supplies.
If you would like to help children in need, you still have a chance through The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund.
Donations are distributed by Zonta Club members, who purchase gift certificates at appropriate businesses to make wishes come true. Each donated dollar is accounted for and recorded. There are no administrators collecting salaries, just a bunch of volunteers with hearts of gold.
Through today, The Garden Island will share stories about families and individuals facing challenges and who would appreciate help.
Only monetary donations are accepted. Checks, payable to Zonta Club of Kauai Foundation, can be mailed to P.O. Box 3032, Lihue, HI 96766. Info: 822-9882.
