With Christmas just two days away, there is still time to help those in need by donating to The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund.
Two people who could use some assistance are Candy and Kira.
Candy has been homeless most of her adult life and has been suffering from substance abuse addiction. She was living on the streets and in emergency shelters in Honolulu for the last 10 years before she moved back to Kauai. She does not like staying in emergency shelters because she has a hard time sleeping at night.
She could use a bus pass and warm clothes for the cold months ahead. A holiday meal would also be appreciated.
Kira lost her job a few months ago. Her relationship with her partner also ended and the couple were evicted from their housing rental. She was living on the streets and was sometimes allowed shelter on church grounds. For the last 12 months, Kira stayed in her vehicle. She says that she will soon be living with a friend in exchange for cooking and housekeeping.
She has no income and would appreciate a warm jacket and shoes.
If you would like to help out those in need this holiday season, please contribute to The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund.
Donations are distributed by Zonta Club members, who purchase gift certificates at appropriate businesses to make wishes come true. Each donated dollar is accounted for and recorded. There are no administrators collecting salaries, just a bunch of volunteers with hearts of gold.
Through Christmas Eve, The Garden Island will share stories about families and individuals facing challenges and who would appreciate help.
Only monetary donations are accepted. Checks, payable to Zonta Club of Kauai Foundation, can be mailed to P.O. Box 3032, Lihue, HI 96766. Info: 822-9882.
