LIHUE — An armed Kekaha man who tried to leave Kmart without paying for items during the Shop with a Cop program was promptly arrested.
While men in blue and kids roamed the aisles Monday, a 42-year-old man attempted to walk out of the store with about $100 worth of merchandise. He was arrested for third-degree theft and firearm violations.
A Kmart loss prevention clerk said the incident took about three minutes. The suspect was caught by an employee and several officers arrested him.
The clerk said the suspect told him “this was the best time to do it because they are all busy.”
No charges have been filed.
