Kauai Police Department Sgt. Darla Abbatiello said it was funny how the children she was shopping with were more worried about their family members than themselves Monday morning at Big Kmart.
“OK, how about we go look for something for yourself,” Abbatiello told her young shopper. “We have enough for all your family. We need something for you.”
Abbatiello was among the nearly 50 KPD officers who spent part of their day with children in the Shop with a Cop program.
Rosie Carrillo of the Children’s Justice Center of Kauai coordinated agencies around the island to come up with the list of children who were treated to breakfast at Little Caesar’s, a photo with Santa, and a $50 Kmart gift card to use as they wanted. Many bought gifts for their brothers, sisters and parents.
“We have a secret angel who provided an additional $75 gift card for each of the 50 shoppers,” said KPD Lt. Rod Green. “But the angel wants each of you officers to present the surprise to your shoppers.”
Jason Caldeira, Waimea High School football coach, was overwhelmed by the program.
“This is just too much,” he said. “You folks do so much, and this?”
Rep. Derek Kawakami said this was the most worthwhile time of his day, staying to watch the interaction of officers and children filling the aisles.
“I’m one of Rosie’s neighbors,” said Mela Kapali who had her son helping distribute Kmart shopping bags. “Rosie told us about this program several times. I always wanted to come and because it’s the winter break, I brought Jaden along so we could help in whatever way we can and be part of the program.”
Manager Jarrett Chytka said Kmart has been doing the Shop With A Cop program for more than 20 years. Monday, it had 30 associates standing by to help officers.
“This program would not be possible without the associates and the police officers, and especially Rosie who finds the children, and f you look at it, that is a lot of children that Rosie has helped,” he said.
