Children are facing trying times during the holidays.
Joseph is a 14-year-old boy who has been exposed to methamphetamine by his family members for the past 10 years. He is very upset because his older brother, whom he looks up to, went to jail on a grand theft auto charge. He has had difficulty fitting into his school clothes lately and would love some gift cards so he could get some new shorts, shoes and shirts for school and after school.
Shiloh has experienced life-long traumatic stress due to his mother’s mental illness, and ongoing abuse by his father. He takes care of his younger siblings despite being only two years older, often making sure that they have food and clean clothes for school every day. He has begun to take time for himself by going to work out and go to the beach, and would love some workout gear (Hydroflask water bottle, hats, socks) and/or beach gear (surf shorts, rash guard, towel, backpack).
Sarah is a 15-year-old girl who has had a lifelong history of abuse at the hands of her mother, though she now lives with a foster family. As a result, she experiences episodes of depression that make functioning in school and at home difficult. She loves to draw and journal, and would love some art supplies to use with her passion.
If you would like to help out those in need like these children, please contribute to The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund.
Donations are distributed by Zonta Club members, who purchase gift certificates at appropriate businesses to make wishes come true. Each donated dollar is accounted for and recorded. There are no administrators collecting salaries, just a bunch of volunteers with hearts of gold.
Through Christmas Eve, The Garden Island will share stories about families and individuals facing challenges and who would appreciate help.
Only monetary donations are accepted. Checks, payable to Zonta Club of Kauai Foundation, can be mailed to P.O. Box 3032, Lihue, HI 96766. Info: 822-9882.
