Letters for Dec. 19, 2015
Article didn’t get testimony right
The inaccurate article, “Rents on the rise,” (TGI, Nov. 29) included my name with a misquoting and misinterpretation of my testimony.
I did testify at the Nov. 18 County Council meeting that if an amendment which would apply the year 2015 rents rates to the year 2016 program it would give all landlords the opportunity to reapply and most likely increase the number of affordable rental units for the general public.
As an alternative, I supported the amendment introduced by Vice Chair Ross Kagawa to use the year 2016, 100 percent median income tier of allowable monthly rent amounts instead of the year 2016, 80 percent tier in the county’s 2016 Long Term Affordable Tenant Occupied Rental program noting that the year 2016, 80 percent tiered rents are lower than the year 2015, 80 percent tiered rents.
Initially, this amendment passed with a 4-to-2 vote until council member Mason Chock reconsidered his vote and decided to vote with JoAnn Yukimura whose concern was the subsidized Section 8 rentals, not the affordable rents for the working public and Arryl Kaneshiro, to defeat this amendment.
After talking personally and giving testimony, I felt I did all I could to correct the allowable rents for the next fiscal year.
Furthermore, I want to correct your misguided assumption that I will be staying with the county’s program. I most likely will not participate in the affordable rental program because it is not a program that I can rely on to be fair.
