HANAMAULU — Aiwa Brun has played the role of Jesus in the Easter play at King’s Chapel four times.
For the Christmas musical, “Birthday of a King,” this weekend, he’s doing an about face — he’ll be the evil lord/jester.
His new character, Brun said, has spunk and attitude, which he likes.
“I wanted to do something different this year, switch it up a little bit,” he said following a rehearsal Tuesday night.
But whether he’s playing the good or the bad guy in a King’s Chapel production, Brun knows why he’ll give his best efforts to each performance this Saturday and Sunday.
“Because of the message it gives out,” he said. “Christmas is more than just presents, it more than just gifts. It’s more than being around family. It’s about the meaning of what Christmas is.”
“Birthday of a King” is sort of a Christmas musical fantasy that goes beyond entertainment, said Minister Vickie Franks.
“It’s a different take on the Christmas story and what it means for our redemption,” she said.
A big crowd is expected both nights.
“People can have something that will be life-changing at Christmas time, something that’s encouraging and uplifting,” Franks said.
After several years of producing the traditional Christmas story for the community, Vickie and husband, Pastor Steve Franks, decided to try something new this year with Birthday of a King. It’s been well received.
The 90-minute production includes a cast and crew of about 70 adults and children who began rehearsals about six weeks ago to master the numerous songs and dances.
The Franks family — Vickie, Steve, daughters Mackenzie and Ariana and son Evan — all have roles.
“It’s a really fun show,” Vickie said. “Parts of it seem almost like Whoville.”
Doors open at 6:30, with the musical at 7 both nights.
It is free, but donations are welcome.
