LIHUE — Kadomatsu, or the traditional Japanese bamboo-floral arrangement which welcomes in the New Year, is on sale through Dec. 31 at the Hawaii Government Employees Association office on Akahi Street in Lihue.
Proceeds will benefit the HGEA Charles Kendall Scholarship Fund.
The kadomatsu is created when crews go to bamboo fields to harvest the stalks. The harvest is then hewn to size at the HGEA offices with a mass assembly.
Kadomatsu, or translated to mean “gate pine,” is a traditional Japanese decoration of the New Year that is placed in pairs in front of homes to welcome the ancestral spirits, or kami, of the harvest.
