LIHUE — Police arrested a 34-year-old Koloa man after he allegedly assaulted a man at a bar at the Kukui Grove Center Monday night.
The 30-year-old victim of Kapaa was at Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu in critical condition Tuesday.
According to a preliminary police report, the suspect, Nicholas Char, was at Kalapaki Joe’s when he began taunting patrons and punching windows. Char was removed from the restaurant for his belligerent behavior, but had re-entered when he then walked up to a man and punched him in his jaw, causing the victim to fall to the ground, the report said.
Police, medics and firefighters were called to the scene about 9:45 p.m. and located the victim unresponsive. He was initially transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital and then flown to Queen’s hospital with life-threatening head injuries.
Char was booked for first-degree assault and released after posting $20,000 bail. He is expected to appear in court on Jan. 20.
The case remains under police investigation.
