LIHUE — Karen Ono of the Kauai Board of Realtors said Sunday’s event was not bad, considering how little publicity it received.
“Russell Haluapo didn’t even tell me about this until Friday,” Ono said. “I was thinking that it was about that time when the ride would take place, but no one told us anything until Russell mentioned it, after I asked.”
Nearly two hundred motorcycle enthusiasts, all arriving with brand-new toys for Kauai’s keiki, descended on the Historic County Building as clear skies and bright sunshine warmed the morning.
“The weather is perfect for this,” said Larry Feinstein, a motorcycle enthusiast who recently returned from a Mainland trek. “This is a pretty good event considering there was very little publicity.”
Haluapo has been coordinating the annual Toys for Keiki run for more than two decades. The new toys are distributed to churches around Kauai who use them to fill Christmas wish lists from children in need.
“We also collect food to help families feed their children during this time,” said J.C. Crouch of Kauai Harley-Davidson, an event sponsor. “We only used to collect toys, but when we found that families can use food, we started doing that, too.”
Aloha Kia was another sponsor, providing a car to transport the toys from the Sunday collection point.
“Jeff Corona was gracious enough to provide a Kia vehicle so we could move all these toys,” Ono said.
