PUHI — The Voyager girls started the Kauai Interscholastic Federation season with a shutout win at home.
Island School’s varsity girls soccer team defeated Waimea, 3-nil, Saturday morning at Island School.
“It was really good. I’m happy for the girls,” said Island School head coach Colby Ayonon. “We got our work cut out for us this year, but I think it’s a really good season opener for us on our home field.”
Voyagers sophomore striker Emma Kelekoma scored two goals for Island School.
Kelekoma scored her first goal at the the 17th minute from inside the 18-yard box. Her second goal came at the 61st minute. Junior striker Ali Temme served a cross from the near side and Kelekoma met the ball inside the box to put it passed Waimea’s goalkeeper.
“Definitely, I think our passing was improved,” Kelekoma said. “We’re working more as a team. We have a lot of freshmen out there, but they’re working hard. Everybody is working hard. I’m so happy that this is the way we started off the season.”
Island School senior midfielder Emma Schneck scored the game’s first goal at the 15th minute. She took a shot from outside the 18-yard box. The ball went to the far side top corner and to the back of the net.
Ayonon said though he was pleased with the scoring, he took more satisfaction with his defense holding the Menehune scoreless.
“I’m happy about the shutout. We’ve been working on a lot of defense these past few weeks — through the preseason,” Ayonon said. “We’re more happy about the shutout, but of course the goals helps out, too.”
The Menehune had a chance to get on the board in the last minute of the game. Senior midfielder Brandy Domingo took a shot from distance, but the ball went straight to the Island School keeper.
Waimea head coach William Trugillo said both teams played evenly except that his team could not covert on chances.
“That’s something that we got to learn — to put it to the back of the net,” Trugillo said. “We were missing some players, but that’s no excuse for not having done better.
“To me, pretty much even throughout the game. Ball went back and forth. We had opportunities. We just didn’t cash in,” he added. “They had slightly more opportunities, and they did cash in. That was the difference when all was said and done.”
Island School (1-0 KIF) will next play Kapaa at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Vidinha Stadium. Waimea (0-1 KIF) will play Kauai High at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Vidinha Stadium.
