PRINCEVILLE — The weather was windy and rainy, a contrast to the heavy moisture-laden air in a mural dedicated Thursday by Karlyn Sukehira of the Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas.
Joel Guy, a Haena filmmaker and photographer, created the three-panel mural which features the taro fields against a backdrop of the North Shore mountains draped with a lei of clouds.
“On the day he took the photo, there were storm warnings,” said Denise Wardlow, Westin Princeville’s general manager. “But the result is a beautiful photo that will hopefully cause visitors to the resort to want to learn more about the history and culture of this special place.”
The depiction of the local landscape demonstrates the Westin Princeville’s commitment to the respect of the host culture as well as community, Sukehira said during the short dedication attended by resort department heads and personnel.
The resort also graced the lobby with its fresh, decorated Christmas tree laden with hula implements, ukulele, and other Hawaiiana created by representatives of the Westin Princeville departments.
Guy, with wife Emily and son Grayson, said he was proud of being selected to be a part of the resort’s offering to its guests.
He said conditions came together for the photo
“When I went out, the sky parted and a beautiful waterfall appeared,” Guy said. “It ended up being a most beautiful morning. It just shows that you never know what the day will bring.”
