LIHUE — While waiting to board The Kauai Bus, Daniel Pimental’s eyes were hooked on an image of the Grinch plowing through a decorated Christmas tree.
It’s a sight quite foreign to those accustomed to waiting for the bus from inside the comfort of the lobby at Wilcox Memorial Hospital.
“He really likes the Grinch,” said Monica Contrades, of Kapaa, who was waiting for the bus beside Pimental. “He also likes the Hawaiian 12 Days of Christmas with the big fat pigs.”
Surrounded by Christmas trees decorated by the hospital’s different departments, the pair were made a bit more cheerful as they watched staff members apply the finishing touches.
The public is invited to enjoy a forest of decorated trees from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily through Jan. 3. There is no charge to view the cheerful holiday decor.
The public is also encouraged to vote for their favorite tree, which will afford some bragging rights to those who decorated the winning spruce, said Faith Campbell, Wilcox Memorial Hospital’s spokeswoman.
“We have some pretty unique trees,” Campbell said. “There is the Hawaiian 12 Days of Christmas with a sign noting what each item stands for in the countdown, and personally, I think the lady in red is pretty creative. We also have a tree which took a year to create because that person visited beaches around the island and the decorations are made using sand from all the beaches visited.”
Kim Bunao of the Intensive Care Unit agreed.
“But I think ours is pretty,” she said after putting the finishing touches on the tree with the help of Josie Baris. “Not only is it pretty, it has color. We need to get a picture of the tree for the people upstairs to see.”
