PUHI — Marilyn Mach said she’s waited 30 years to have an exhibit.
“I should have done this years ago,” Mach said. “Only now, I’m doing this.”
Mach will have a series of photos with a garden pools theme, said Serge Marcil, Kauai Community College digital media arts instructor.
The free photo exhibit will open Friday at the Lihue Civic Center, Piikoi Building and run through May.
“Class already ended,” Marcil said. “The students are in the final steps of preparing their material for exhibit, and I have to take a trip so the opening got moved up.”
The work is by students who took fall semester courses, including Isaac Hamrick.
“Photography makes me feel not myself, maybe a bit fearless,” he said. “I have a fear of bugs and spiders, but if you put a camera in my hands, I want to get close to them to get the best shot. I think I found something I can get passionate about.”
Student Malia Ridings has developed a passion for preserving the Coco Palms Resort.
“I was fortunate enough to walk through the property with the developers,” she said. “They spoke of what they plan to do, and as they did, I did photographs to preserve the memories before they tear it down and start building. Once the project is done, I have the images to see how close they came to what was there.”
Ridings will have her series of the Coco Palms walk-through as part of the exhibit.
During the six-month display period, the public is invited to vote for their favorite pictures. A drawing of the votes will determine a winner who will receive prints of the pictures they voted for.
