KAPAA — Police are trying to determine the cause of death of a body found outside a building Monday morning.
Officials have not released the identity of the man, but said the 62-year-old was homeless and may have died overnight in his sleep.
The body was found wrapped in a green blanket outside the Payroll & Income Tax building off Kuhio Highway, near Cost-U-Less. A black plastic trash bag and Sprite bottles surrounded him.
Nalia Leong, a Cost-U-Less supervisor, said first responders, including firefighters and an ambulance, began to arrive on the scene as early as 10 a.m. Monday. Three Kauai police officers were at the scene around 11 a.m.
Leong said she knows homeless people who sleep in the area. She’s concerned the man found dead was one of her customers.
“A lot of them come shop over here,” Leong said. “They are very nice. I’m not sure which one it is.”
Leong said some of her regulars who live in the area also know members of the homeless population and are trying to figure out who died Monday morning.
“I’m a little sad,” Leong said. “I have a feeling it happened overnight.”
An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death, said Kauai County Spokeswoman Sarah Blane.
Police said there is no evidence of foul play or visible injury, according to Blane.
