LIHUE — When George Texeira saw that The Garden Island had called him several times Wednesday, he wondered why.
“I wasn’t sure,” he said.
The Lihue man returned the call and when told he was the winner of a trip to Las Vegas, he was a bit skeptical.
“At first, I didn’t believe it,” Texeria said. “You’re joking.”
No joke. This was the real deal.
Friday, he visited TGI’s office on Kuhio Highway and claimed his prize — airfare for two to Vegas, accommodations, meals and transportation from the airport to his hotel.
“Here I am now picking up the packet,” Texeira said, smiling. “It’s all true.”
He won the trip in a holiday drawing offered by The Garden Island and Midweek, which are owned by Oahu Publications, Inc. Entry forms were published in gift guides produced by both publications.
Texeria read about the promotion and a chance to win the trip in the newspaper and visited Kukui Grove Center, where he dropped off his entry form at a collection site. His was selected from hundreds in a random drawing.
“Exciting,” he said. “Very exciting.”
He and his wife, JoAnne, like to enter drawings and have done well.
When Times Supermarket opened, George won the main prize, nearly $1,000. And JoAnne once won a bike at Ishihara Market in Waimea.
They’ll likely take their Vegas trip next summer, and spend time with relatives.
They’re also planning a cruise to Alaska next year, so money could be a bit tight.
“We’ll have to look in the paper to see if there’s a drawing coming up for cash,” George said, laughing.
