KAPAA — It was only Dec. 2, but residents of Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital were already receiving Christmas presents.
Residents were surprised when a delegation from Wyndham Ka Eo Kai and Shearwater in Princeville were joined by 36 students and three teachers from the St. Catherine’s preschool in presenting a holiday program of songs and gifts.
“This is absolutely amazing,” said Josie Pablo, hospital recreation director.
Pablo said the event was a great way to open the residents’ December calendar.
The students met with the Wyndham staff to distribute gifts to each of the residents gathered in the hospital auditorium. Students were greeted with warm smiles and hugs.
“This is so special,” said Gerald Hirata, general manager of Wyndham Ka Eo Kai and Shearwater. “Watching the residents and seeing how they appreciate the visit, and the gifts is what makes the holidays so special.”
Morgan Lopez said this is the second year Wyndham has partnered with the St. Catherine’s preschool.
Students gave out blankets, toiletry items, pens and notebooks.
“After seeing this, Wyndham is going to do this every year,” Lopez said. “We’ll definitely be back next year.”
Pablo said the calendar will be highlighted with the family luncheon on Dec. 18 when the Kilauea Social Club with the Gushiken family comes to call.
