LIHUE — Winners of the “Live Out Loud” writing contest will be announced at Ha Coffee Bar at 7 p.m. Saturday. Seventeen finalists were chosen from over 60 entries. First- and second-place winners will read their essay, receive cash prizes and a scholarship to the 2016 Kauai Writers Conference next November.
Categories include Preteen, Young Adult and Adult. Winning themes include a Hawaiian father’s last wish; an eclectic couple on an ocean voyage and a poetic journey through tragedy.
“The winning stories are imaginative, hilarious, heartfelt and extremely creative,” said Marta Lane, judge and author, “We have talented writers on this island and I look forward to watching the crowd’s reaction as the winners read their work this Saturday night.”
Essays from 16 winners and runners-up will be published in the “Live Out Loud” book. The event is free and the public is welcome.
Live Out Loud is funded by a grant from G.N. Wilcox Festival and sponsored by The Garden Island newspaper. The annual contest is part of the Kauai Writers Festival. Year-long events include the Kauai Writers Conference and workshops presented by New York Times best-selling authors, as well as Homegrown Hawaii, workshops by successful Hawaii-based authors.
