Mr. Simms lives with his son and daughter-in-law. He loves to talk with people and especially loves music and listening to the radio. But his radio is very old and receiving a brand-new one would thrill him for the holidays.

The budget is tight at home and since his son is the only provider, all of their income goes toward paying for bills, groceries and medical expenses.
Sonia is another facing tough times in these holidays.
She lives with her daughter and extended family in a small two-bedroom home which they rent. The family has unemployment issues and so Sonia’s monthly income helps to pay the rent and purchase food. She herself battles arthritis and other health issues and the rest of her income goes toward buying medication. She isn’t asking for much, but could use a new comforter and some new clothes for the holidays.
These are just two of the people who will receive assistance through The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund.
Through Christmas Eve, The Garden Island will share daily, front-page stories about families (we don’t use their real names) facing challenges and who would appreciate a little help.
The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund is an avenue for everyone to provide that assistance.
Donations are distributed by Zonta Club members, who purchase gift certificates at appropriate businesses to make wishes come true.
Each donated dollar is accounted for and recorded. There are no administrators collecting salaries. The money goes directly to provide gift certificates to those who need them for gifts and groceries.
Anyone making a donation of $50 or more can have their picture presenting the check published in TGI. If you hold a fundraiser for the Christmas Fund, let us know and we’ll spread the word.
Only monetary donations are accepted. Checks, payable to Zonta Club of Kauai Foundation, can be mailed to P.O. Box 3032, Lihue, HI 96766. Info: 822-9882.
