Ms. Russell is 95 years old, lives alone and on a fixed income, and enjoys seeing her friends at the senior center when she has the energy to attend. Ms. Russell falls often and living alone can make it more of a challenge.
She has been lucky thus far and can get herself up after falling, but it’s a concern to her children who live so far away. Ms. Russell is a soft-spoken and loving lady and doesn’t ask for much for herself. Everyone who knows her appreciates her sweet nature. A nice orchid or something from nature will brighten up her day.
The senior citizen is one of the people who will receive assistance through The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund.
Through Christmas Eve, The Garden Island will share daily, front-page stories about families (we don’t use their real names) facing challenges and who would appreciate a little help.
The Garden Island/Zonta Christmas Fund is an avenue for everyone to provide that assistance.
Donations are distributed by Zonta Club members, who purchase gift certificates at appropriate businesses to make wishes come true.
Each donated dollar is accounted for and recorded. There are no administrators collecting salaries. The money goes directly to provide gift certificates to those who need them for gifts and groceries.
Anyone making a donation of $50 or more can have their picture presenting the check published in TGI. If you hold a fundraiser for the Christmas Fund, let us know and we’ll spread the word.
Only monetary donations are accepted. Checks, payable to Zonta Club of Kauai Foundation, can be mailed to P.O. Box 3032, Lihue, HI 96766. Info: 822-9882.
Here are a few more stories of those who would welcome assistance.
w Mrs. Dean is 63 years old and has a brain tumor. Her husband had been a caregiver to her but was hospitalized and is in long-term care. Mrs. Dean is struggling at home because she lives alone and has limited help from family and friends. In addition, her prescriptions are expensive and hard to pay for with her income. She would appreciate easy-to-cook or hot meals or groceries.
w Lily is 2 1/2 years old with developmental delays. She is shy and quiet. They live in a multi-generational home and both parents are working. Lily receives speech therapy and special instruction therapy services from Easter Seals Early Intervention Program. In a few months, Lily will be attending Department of Education special needs preschool and her family would appreciate school clothes as well as a small backpack and snacks for her.
