Crooner and funny man Wille K will be performing at the Kauai Community College Performing Arts Center on November 28 in to benefit for Growing Our Own Teachers on Kauai, a nonprofit organization that raises money for aspiring elementary teachers on the island.
“This is going to be a wonderful time,” said George Corrigan, president of Growing Our Own Teachers on Kauai. “(Wille K) is one of the best entertainers I’ve seen in my life.”
Willie K’s music varies carries with it influences from all genres and Corrigan said he expects to hear blues, opera, country, and Hawaiian musical styles at this concert, along with a few traditional holiday tunes.
It’s been two years since the musician played at the Growing Our Own Techers on Kauai’s annual fundraising event, because he was already booked last year. Corrigan said he’s excited to have Willie K return to the KCC stage.
“Even though we’re calling it a holiday concert, he does more than just holiday music,” Corrigan said. “This guy plays all kinds of music and he’s not to be missed, especially if you haven’t seen him before.”
Growing Our Own Teachers on Kauai has helped more than 60 Kauai people get jobs in Kauai elementary school classrooms.
“Our mission is to help local people get their elementary teaching degrees so that they can stay in our schools,” Corrigan said. “This concert is our major fundraiser.”
The organization helps an average of four upstart teachers every year, though they’ve had groups as large as 13 people. They provide $4,000 to each student during their last semester of school and then an additional $500 each once that person has landed a contract in an island classroom.
Folks can use that money for living expenses or to pay college tuition throughout their last semester and Corrigan said they usually use the $500 for classroom supplies.
Saturday’s concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are on sale at growingkauaiteachers.org, or by phone at (808) 631-0643.
General admission is $40.
Comedian Rodney Villanueva will be opening for Willie K and the event will be emceed by KONG Radio’s Ron Wiley.
