Respect rights of all people
Sadly our self-proclaimed genius presidential candidate, Donald Trump, has played right into the hands of the terrorists. I am sure one of their primary goals is to intimate the United States and the rest of the free world, ultimately having them do things that are contrary to their ideals and principles and more in line with those of the terrorist movements.
Mr. Trump is doing this by implying that proposing registration of all Muslims in the United States should be considered and is “good management.” He also wants to monitor, and in some cases, close mosques where people worship. Further, he wants to reinstate the inhumane torture method of water boarding.
Shades of Nazi Germany, where Jewish people were registered and in many cases tattooed with their registration number tortured and in most cases, ultimately killed. We know where this led us.
Another example of an inappropriate knee jerk reaction to a perceived crisis was forcing loyal and caring Americans of Japanese ancestry in to relocation camps during World War II. This was done with utter disregard to their rights as citizens of the United States and was of course driven by paranoia and racism as is the current reaction to the terrorists.
We must be prudent and careful but we must not be conned into giving up the rights of any of our citizens.
Frankly, as an afterthought, it is amazing that Mr. Trump seems to have all the reported support. If this is valid, it does not bode well for the future of the United States and our principles. I shudder to think what may happen to the free world if Mr. Trump should somehow be elected.

Consider saving before raising taxes
I have an idea. Why doesn’t the county council address all the tax savings that the county audit showed. After all, wasn’t that the
purpose of the Office of the County Auditor? They should do that before any discussion of raising taxes.

Good job for finishing repaving project
At long last the road going to the Kapaa transfer station has been completely repaved! A huge mahalo to Larry Dill and Ed Renaud for finally addressing this problem. Under Larry’s leadership as our county engineer problems are slowly getting solved. Hopefully, paving will continue on a yearly basis (not on a two- or three-year schedule) with whatever budget is allocated. And the repaving budget must be greatly increased for Larry and Ed to take care of our 300 miles of county roads — some not repaved for 20 years and more.
Since Larry is now doing resurfacing by AASHTO or HAPI standards (unlike methods done in the past) the cost up front per mile is higher but the longevity of the roads will be doubled or tripled and the total cost savings will be huge — particularly eliminating early pot holes and vehicle damage!
Good luck, Larry, and you and your staff keep up the fine work.
