If you’ve been thinking about visiting the Kauai Humane Society to adopt a dog or a cat, there may be no better time than this weekend.
Because for what may be the first time in its history, KHS is offering free adoptions Friday through Monday.
The typical fees associated with adoptions are $60 for dogs, $100 for puppies, $25 for cats and $60 for kittens.
Executive Director Penny Cistaro said with Thanksgiving here and Black Friday coming up, a promotion to place pets in good homes seemed like a good fit. And it can’t get much more enticing than free.
“It’s trying to get people’s interest in coming to the shelter and seeing what we have,” she said.
And there are many good cats, about 50, and dogs, about 30, in need of a home.
To name just a few, there’s Kaya, an 11-month-old Chihuahua; Madeline, an eight-year-old Terrier/Airedale mix; Ambrose a two-year-old hound mix; and Mohe, a year-old retriever/labrador/hound mix.
On the cat side, there’s two-year-old, Kina, four-year-old Chester, five-year-old Claire and eight-year-old Tipper, all domestic shorthair mixes.
Each has been screened by KHS and would make great pets, Cistaro said.
Every adoption will include a microchip, spay/neuter and vaccinations.
The online company, Zappos, is underwriting the event and will pay KHS for each adoption.
A free adoption day is not something new to the shelter industry, Cistaro said, but is new at KHS.
Because it’s free doesn’t mean the pets will be sent out the door with anyone.
“All of our regular criteria will apply to adoption,” Cistaro said.
That includes meeting with each person seeking to adopt a pet and talking about what the living situation would be, whether there’s another animal in the house and other influencing factors.
A pet license would need to be purchased, and a collar and leash would be necessary to take a dog home.
KHS is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Monday. It is closed Sunday.
Cats up for the free adoption will also be at Petco, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday to Monday, and at Natural Pet Hawaii, 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Friday.
A donation drive for the Kauai Humane Society’s Blooming Tails Resale Store in Lihue is set for Saturday at the Anaina Hou Farmer’s Market in Kilauea.
Gently used clothing, accessories, jewelry, collectibles, kitchen and houseware items, sport items, tools, toys, games and small furniture items are welcome. Sales support KHS operations.
The KHS “Wags on Wheels” team will be there, too, in the mobile adoption unit with some dogs in need of a home.
WOW volunteers will be on hand to answer questions about shelter programs.
