LIHUE — More than 4,000 students, families and school staff at 25 schools in Hawaii recently participated in the semiannual “Fire Up Your Feet Fall” activity challenge,” competing to win cash prizes and support physical activity and wellness programs at their school.
The awardees on Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the Big Island earned a combined $5,350 to fund the purchase of physical activity and sports equipment or support wellness initiatives on campus.
King Kaumualii Elementary School on Kauai received $1,000.
Using the Fire Up Your Feet online activity tracker, participating schools logged more than 1,546,954 minutes of physical activity — walking, biking, jogging, surfing and more — over the course of one month. Prizes were awarded in several categories, including most overall participation, highest weekly activity tracking numbers, most bicycling and most walking.
“Fire Up Your Feet is just one way to engage our keiki in fun physical activities while teaching them the importance of adopting healthy habits at a young age,” said Mary Ann Barnes, president of Kaiser Permanente Hawaii.
