LIHUE — Salvation Army Lt. Elizabeth Gross wants to make sure people have a place for a meal Thanksgiving Day.
“We’ll have enough of the leftovers so people can come in for a meal on Thanksgiving,” Gross said Tuesday while watching volunteers prepare turkeys for the annual community luncheon. “The Thanksgiving day lunch coincides with our Kokua Soup Kitchen program which starts at 11:30 a.m.”
The Salvation Army of Kauai Lihue Corps is serving its 53rd annual Thanksgiving luncheon from 10 a.m. to noon today at Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall.
The Salvation Army Hanapepe Corps will also be serving a Thanksgiving luncheon, 10 a.m. to noon today at the Hanapepe Salvation Army Community Center.
There will be entertainment at both events.
“We have a lot of volunteers to make this work,” Gross said. “Johnny Saguid has been wonderful, cooking 19 of the 30 turkeys for Lihue right here in our kitchen.
Ron Miller of the Hukilau Lanai prepared nine turkeys with one being prepared by Mark Oyama of Mark’s Place and Contemporary Flavors Catering for the ceremonial carving, she said.
Gross estimates between 600 to 700 meals will be served today.
“We don’t want to run out, so we’re making sure there is a little extra,” Gross said. “We’ll be using that to supplement the Thanksgiving day meal. We don’t want people to go through Thanksgiving with no meal.”
