POIPU — Rain showers dampened the area but not the spirit of the event as Kauai closed its Hawaii Fashion Month program with a runway fashion show.
Several hundred people braved the rain and mud Saturday night in “dressed to kill” attire, and huddled under tents as models strutted along the runway set up in the middle of the Poipu Beach Athletic Club’s pool.
Chez Chanterelle, one of the featured designers for the finale, was actually crying in frustration about the weather, said one of the HFM committee members.
But the crew of the Poipu Beach Athletic Club addressed the situation as best as could be expected, running out onto the runway to squeegee the excess water between changes.
Workers also laid out additional protective fabric during the presentation of Chez Chanterelle’s bridal wear and gowns.
The event also served as the launch for the winter issue of Kauai Lifestyle Magazine. Publisher Renee Kawakami also serves with the HFM Kauai Planning Committee.
Hawaii Fashion Month Kauai launched earlier this month with a fashion show at The Shops with Kukuiula, another ramp event at the Kukui Grove Center, and the finale in Poipu. During the month, designer pieces from a. ell design, Kinis by Renee, Malie, Puka Surf Co. Hawaii, machinemachie, and WB’s Top Secret were featured with La Vida Aloha whose work has graced the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, Gypsy Rain, and Chez Chanterelle.
Stacie Chiba-Miguel, a member of the HFM Kauai Planning Committee, said young designers on Kauai should contact the HFM Kauai Planning Committee so they can be included as part of next year’s celebration.
Hawaii Fashion Month showcases the state’s pool of talent and promotes sustainable growth of the fashion industry.
