NAWILIWILI — Girl Scouts from Troops 2158 of Lihue and a sister troop of younger Girl Scouts, Troop 1049, donated 437 pounds of food Friday at the Kauai Independent Food Bank.
The effort was spearheaded by Isabel Gampon, the reigning Miss Junior Teen Hawaii. She will be relinquishing her crown in a few weeks and wanted to do a final food drive before her reign ends, said Ray Gampon, Isabel’s mother.
“She did a food drive last year, and this year wanted to do another before giving up her crown,” Ray said. “But not only did she do a food drive, she got her sisters from the Girl Scout troop involved. These girls, in turn, got their sister troop, 1049 from Koloa, to go out and collect food, too.”
Isabel had a goal of trying to beat her collection of 132 pounds from last year’s drive. This year, she finished with nearly double that amount: 276 pounds.
Combined with the contributions from the Girl Scouts, the total came in at 437 pounds.
“These are young girls,” said Jennifer Veeck, a leader with Troop 1049. “We couldn’t have them out asking people for food, so we limited them to just asking their families.”
Leona Perez, the programs manager for the Kauai Independent Food Bank, thanked the girls for their contribution, noting that contributions such as theirs go a long way toward making families happy, especially during the holidays.
“This is what community service is,” Perez told the girls. “You do something which makes others happy.”
The food will be applied to the Kauai Independent Food Bank Holiday Food and Fund drive.
