LIHUE — Jayson Ching of Paul’s Electrical Contracting said the light posts are going up now, but testing will not take place until early next year.
“The lights can’t be turned on,” Ching said. “This is the shearwater fledging time so we’re putting up the posts now, but will be back after the fledging season to turn on the lights and do the final adjustments.”
Work started on erecting eight banks of lights to illuminate the Vidinha Stadium baseball field area as the crew tried to beat the threat of rain which hung over the activity.
“We’ve already installed six of the eight poles for this project,” Ching said. “This is the seventh pole, and there is another one on the far side (right field), but the road there was blocked.”
Edmund Villanueva, a stadium crew member, said he was of the understanding that following the installation of light poles, work would start on improving the dugouts.
“This is good,” Villanueva said. “A lot of people have been complaining the baseball games take place while they’re working and cannot see the game. This way, if they move the schedule, the people can come after work.”
Lenny Rapozo, director of the county’s Department of Parks and Recreation, said the county was going to work on improving the baseball field at Vidinha Stadium when he addressed the Americans of Japanese Ancestry league during the opening ceremonies in 2014.
County spokeswoman Mary Daubert said the lights cost $786,000 and was funded through the County of Kauai, Capital Improvement Project.
“Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the project is expected to be completed in the spring of 2016,” Daubert said.
Paul’s Electrical Contracting is the contractor for the Vidinha Stadium installation as well as projects to retrofit other county facilities.
