The folks at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Lihue will be hosting a three-day celebration this weekend, honoring King Kamehameha IV and Queen Emma.
The church annually celebrates its founding monarchy and invites the community to join in three days of silent auctions, music, pupus, crafts and baked goods. The entire event is themed with Hawaiian history and music.
“It’s a really fun weekend and we’re really excited about it,” said Beth Debrey, parish administrator. “People bring food in and we have a couple of parishioners that took on all the pupus, so that’s their contribution.”
The event kicks off tonight with a benefit concert at 7 featuring Jason Blake as emcee and performers Shilo Pa, Papa Laua‘e o Makana, and Kauai Voices directed by Randy Leonard, Juno Apalla, and Monica Chung. People can get to the church early for 6 p.m. pupus and drinks, as well as music by Darryl Gonzales and Jeff Mira.
A silent auction will also be opening this evening and people will have a chance to bid before the benefit concert, as well as a chance to check on their bid items during a reception after the concert. The silent auction has two parts — online and within the church.
The silent auction at the church includes quilts, dishes, craft items, candles and decorative items.
“There’s lots of really great gift items for Christmas,” Debrey said.
Online, the auction boasts vacation packages to the Big Island and Guam, as well as Kauai resort stays, massages, and surf lesson packages.
The celebration continues on Saturday with the All Angels Holiday Craft Fair from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., where the creations of more than 30 crafters will be for sale.
There will also be plate lunches available.
Saturday evening debuts the first of the three services throughout the weekend, starting at 5:30 p.m., when there will be jazz music.
“After our jazz performances and service on Saturday, we’ll have a reception and we can sit around and have drinks and pupus and laugh for a bit,” Debrey said.
The first of two services on Sunday begins at 7:30 a.m. and will be a more contemplative service, according to Debrey.
The 9:45 service will have hula dancing and brunch in the parish hall.
“We’re really excited about the event and we’re hoping that everybody can come out to join us,” she said.
