Kauai’s Domestic Violence Prosecution Unit has received almost $50,000 in federal money. The County Council recently approved the department’s receipt of the grant.
The STOP Violence Against Women Formula Grant for $48,595 is a recurring federal grant that provides money for wages and supplies for the department from January to November 2016.
Prosecuting attorney Justin Kollar said the department annually sets a goal to screen domestic violence reports and evaluate for charging within 30 days. The other goal is to achieve a conviction rate of 75 percent.
“That (target is) something that we hit on an annual basis,” Kollar said at Wednesday’s County Council meeting. “We recognize that these cases need to happen quickly, so we prioritize them.”
