Divers take care of the ocean, coral
Mr. Tombolo (TGI, Sept. 23) is rightfully concerned about possible intentional damage to coral at Tunnels.
Unfortunately his weak, unsubstantiated conclusions and accusations are disparaging to all divers and dive companies.
He notes there were divers “in the caves below where the coral damage occurred.” Wouldn’t it be more significant if they were above the damage?
Also he states that “snorkelers don’t carry anything heavier than a camera,” and thus concludes the damage must have been done by a diver, presumably on a decent to the caves below.
I wonder what tool a diver would carry to break off coral?
Lastly he states that “there was a dive van parked in the vicinity.” Apparently this is all the corroboration necessary for a conviction of divers and companies.
He states that intentional or accidental the damage is done and dive companies should guide and advise their clients so this does not happen again.
The actual cause of this damage may never be known, whether nature or man — there is no proof.
What we do know is that divers are one of the most ecology-conscious groups using the oceans. They are required to complete a rigorous training and certification process which includes attention to sensitive marine environments, including precious coral reefs.
I am not a diver but I snorkel at Tunnels weekly. I have friends who dive and instruct there. I am continually impressed by their dedication to the health and well-being of the reef and ocean. Their willingness to teach others, especially visitors, about the living coral and its delicate balance is admirable. This is especially poignant when asking visitors to “please not walk on the coral because it breaks so easily.” I hear this request virtually every day at Tunnels.
In addition, most of the divers I know are actively involved in reef and shoreline cleanups and public awareness campaigns.
