The nene pair honked and squawked as they made their way along the stream leading to the No. 1 tee box at the Puakea Golf Course.
The nene is Hawaii’s endangered state bird, and Dr. Christian Vlautin will present a free “Know Your Nene” presentation 6 p.m. Nov. 19 at the Hanapepe Public Library meeting room.
Sponsored by the Friends of the Hanapepe Public Library, Vlautin will speak on the Hawaiian goose’s biology, its natural history, and its status on Kauai.
Vlautin is coordinator of the Kauai Nene Conservation Plan which is engaging private citizens, businesses and landowners to better understand the relationship between people and the nene on Kauai.
A new project of the Kauai Nene Habitat Conservation Plan is aimed at informing the community about nene while learning about the citizens’ thoughts and concerns on its status.
Information gathered by the Kauai Nene Conservation Plan will be used to draft a Habitat Conservation Plan, which not only provides the best possible recovery for the nene, but also includes the island’s citizens in the process.
