LIHUE — The week before Thanksgiving is more than prep time for a big dinner and a Black Friday shopping marathon. Nationwide, this time has been set aside for Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week.
Kauai Community Alliance will host the annual Homelessness Awareness Vigil Nov. 16 from 5-7 p.m. at the Lihue United Church. Following the brief services, goody bags will be distributed to those in need and a simple free meal will be served. Agency representatives from many participating agencies will be on hand to answer questions about their programs. Everyone is welcome.
The doors of the historic Stone Church open at 5 p.m. with music provided by Lexi. From 5:30 to 6:30 the service will include speakers ranging from public officials to individuals who are houseless (or formerly houseless). After the service, anyone who is hungry is welcome to stay for chili and rice, tossed salad, dessert, and punch or water.
Homelessness Awareness Week was designed as a time, before the holidays, to reflect upon our community’s needs and show respect for those who lived, or are living, without a permanent place to call home.
