PRINCEVILLE — The University of Hawaii’s A team finished the three-day Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational with total score of 898 (34-over-par) and was 16th on the leaderboard.
UH’s B team had 936 (72-over-par) and was 17th Wednesday at the Princeville Makai Golf Course.
“(Day three) was much-improved, I think,” said Hawaii head coach Ronn Miyashiro. “It was an improvement overall. It was an improvement from yesterday. I’m looking, again, for momentum. That’s all it was today. Momentum in the right direction.”
Hawaii junior Skye Inakoshi was UH’s best golfer in the tournament. He shot a 79 on the last day to bring his final score to 220 (4-over-par) and was tied with five others at 47th place on the individual leaderboard.
Kauai High School alumnus, UH junior Justin “Pono” Tokioka, shot a 77 in the last day to finish with 228 (12-over-par) and was tied with Colorado State’s Jimmy Makloski at 75th place.
“I had a tough day today, but I still enjoyed my time here with my teammates,” Tokioka said. “I didn’t play as I expected. I still have next year. That’s my last chance. I learned a lot this week.”
Kapaa High School alumnus, UH freshman Bryden Salvador, shot his best round Wednesday with 77. He finished the tournament with a score of 245 (29-over-par).
Wake Forest freshman Cameron Young won the individual championship. He shot a 67 in the final day to bring his total to 201 (15-under-par).
Alabama senior Tom Lovelady was second with 203 (13-under-par) and Alabama-Birmingham freshman Tim Harry was third with 204 (12-under-par).
“It’s a very good feeling. I feel like I’ve come a long way,” Young said. “I feel like this fall I started a little rough. I’ve improved a lot thanks to coaches (Dan Walters and Jerry Haas). It’s just nice to end the season on a high note.”
Alabama won the team competition with a collective score of 824 (40-under-par). Wake Forest was second with 829 (35-under-par) and UAB was third with 836 (28-under-par).
“That’s really what we came here for. We beat a great team in Wake Forest. I think they’re ranked in the top-5,” Lovelady said. “To beat them shows that we’re that good, too.”
Lovelady added though he got beat on the individual leaderboard by a couple of strokes, he felt he performed well throughout the three rounds.
“Shoot. I was 13-under-par, and that’s kind of what I thought I needed to shoot to have a chance,” he said. “I got beat, but I did all I could.”
Hawaii next tees off Friday at the Kaanapali Classic College Invitational on Maui. The team’s practice round is today.
“It’s rough, in the sense that we’re literally playing eight days in a row, including practice rounds,” Miyashiro said about playing tournaments back-to-back. “If these guys are even thinking of turning pro or moving on to the next level, this is something that they do regularly.
“There are no days off, sometimes for four or five weeks straight. Or maybe one day off a week for four or five weeks straight,” he added. “It really prepares them for the future if it’s something they really want to do. If this is what they want to do down the line, this gives them the experience now.”
