The National Tropical Botanical Garden and Kauai Community College will continue their joint “Balance of Nature” lecture series on Tuesday with a free public talk titled “Alula on the Brink: Saving the Rarest of the Rare” by Seana Walsh, NTBG conservation biologist. The presentation begins at 5:30 p.m. in the KCC cafeteria. Ms. Walsh’s talk will focus on the ‘alula (Brighamia insignis), a plant endemic to Kauai and Niihau which has come to symbolize the plight of rare and endangered native Hawaiian plants. With funding from the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training Grant, Kauai Community College has joined with Kapiolani, Maui, and Windward Community Colleges to deliver a new Certificate of Competence course for school health aides.
The first Level One cohort will complete their classwork next month. SHA Level Two is scheduled to run during the fall 2017 semester for those who have taken Level One. As part of Kauai Community College’s international education effort, a “Global Cafe” will be held noon to 1 p.m. Monday in OCET 106C/D. KCC will host a Job Fair on Wednesday, Nov. 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the OCET Conference Room. The fair should have particular appeal to students who are looking for seasonal positions during the holidays. Biology Professor Brian Yamamoto delivered a presentation titled “Educational Partnerships: A Long History of Successful International Collaborations with Japan” during a recent trip to Toyama, Japan in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Japan’s National Institute of Technology. His presentation was a reaffirmation of the relationship Kauai Community College enjoys with NIT-Toyama and other institutions of higher learning in Japan.
The Hawaii Symphony Orchestra will be coming to Kauai on Nov. 20 for a concert at the KCC Performing Arts Center beginning at 7:30 p.m. Conductor Michael Stern will lead the orchestra in a program of music by Beethoven and Dvorak, featuring Russian pianist Alexander Kobrin. Called the “Van Cliburn of today” by the BBC, Kobrin has established himself at the forefront of today’s concert pianists.
