LIHUE — Kauai Police Chief Darryl D. Perry is offering families a few simple tips to help keep their children safe this Halloween.
“Halloween is meant to be a fun and memorable experience, but it’s always best to stay vigilant to keep your keiki safe,” said Chief Perry. “First and foremost, children should be supervised while trick-or-treating, and all candy and treats should be inspected before children can eat it.”
One treat in particular that is concerning law enforcement and health officials is being marketed as an “organic fruit roll-up” that apparently contains marijuana. The product is reportedly made in Hawaii and sold on Instagram.
“This fruit roll-up appears to be a healthy snack that parents and children may not realize contains marijuana,” Perry said.
Marijuana edibles are gaining popularity due to the legalization of marijuana in some states; however, the public is reminded that it is illegal to consume non-medical marijuana in Hawaii.
“Whether legal or illegal, any consumption of marijuana is dangerous to a child,” Perry said. “The reality is that these products exist, and while it may be unlikely that a child will receive such candy while trick-or-treating, it’s a good reminder to parents to be aware of what their children are consuming, not just on Halloween but every day.”
KPD offers additional Halloween safety tips:
w Trick-or-treat in well-lit areas in a familiar neighborhood.
w Keep a flashlight or glow stick handy.
w Children should be accompanied by an adult while trick-or-treating.
w Children should know their address, phone number, and how to dial 911 in an emergency. Young children should have this information attached to their costume, in the event they get separated or lost.
w Inspect all candy before consumption. Dispose of any candy that is not in its original packaging or shows signs of tampering. When in doubt, throw it out.
w Don’t hesitate to report suspicious activity to police.
“We’re fortunate to live in a safe community, but as parents, we never want to take that for granted,” added Perry. “On behalf of the Kauai Police Department, we wish our community a safe and happy Halloween!”
