LIHUE — Representatives of Times Supermarket presented the schools of the Kauai Interscholastic Federation with a check for more than $39,000 Saturday during the halftime of the final KIF football game of the season.
Greg Gonsalves, the Kapaa High School athletic director, said this is the third year Times Supermarket and Big Save stores have awarded the KIF schools with grants for Adidas uniforms and sports equipment.
“This is a great way for schools to get their uniforms and other equipment,” said Daniel Hamada, president of the KIF and principal of Kapaa High School.
During the Shop and Score campaign which ran from Sept. 9 through Oct. 20, shoppers who purchased a participating product from the Times Supermarket or Big Save stores secured a point which was designated to a participating school of the shopper’s choice.
Following the completion of the program, each participating high school is guaranteed to receive a minimum of $500 in Adidas equipment and uniforms.
The Shop and Score program, celebrating its 14th year in Hawaii, allows high school the opportunity to earn a share of $250,000 in Adidas equipment and uniforms by having shoppers designate points.
Gonsalves said Waimea and Kauai high schools were among the top high schools in the program, with Kapaa finishing strong.
The Shop and Score Scoreboard for the week ending Oct. 16 had Waimea in the No. 2 spot with 43,374 points below the leading Castle High School (45,846 points). Kauai High School was in the No. 4 position with 38,818 points, followed by Kapaa High School who secured the No. 12 position with 27,086 points, just 145 points below No. 11 McKinley High School of Oahu. Island School is in the No. 49 spot with 1,535 points.
According to the Times Shop and Score scoreboard, there are 72 participating schools throughout the state.
