POIPU — A 60-year-old male visitor from Porter Ranch, California, was taken to Wilcox Memorial Hospital Saturday afternoon, where he was pronounced dead.
The man was swimming at Shipwreck Beach in Poipu about 1:15 p.m. when he encountered difficulty, according to a county news release.
Bystanders brought the victim to shore and began performing CPR on him. When lifeguards from the Poipu tower arrived they took over. Firefighters from the Koloa station also performed CPR on the victim.
The man was then transported to the hospital via ambulance.
Life Bridges responded to the hospital to provide assistance to the family.
It was the sixth drowning reported in waters off Kauai this year. There were six drownings in 2014 and 17 in 2013, according to Kauai officials.
