LIHUE — Hawaii graduation rates are above the national average, according to preliminary information released by the Obama Administration this week.
While final graduation rate data will be released next spring by the U.S. Department of Education, Hawaii’s rate sits at 81.9 percent — just above the 81 percent national average.
Kauai’s schools posted higher marks than that in 2013-2014. And principals here say their graduation rates have consistently been in the 80 percent range, with a little fluctuation.
Kauai complex area superintendent Bill Arakaki said one of the keys to the island’s successful graduation rate is partnering with the community.
“Our high school principals are working diligently with community partners to increase their involvement in supporting school with mentors, tutoring and presentations,” Arakaki said. “We are very fortunate to have the support of our business partners, community organizations and Kauai Community College who work direct with our three high schools.”
