Letters for Oct. 20, 2015
Please help drive cancer patients to their medical appointments
Aloha Kauai,
I am a volunteer driver for The American Cancer Society. My service is to drive folks to their treatment and/or medical appointments. It is most gratifying to be able to help my fellow islanders with this need. I am able to choose the number of days, times I am available, and distance I am able to offer.
I am writing this to let you know that more volunteer drivers are needed, especially from the North Shore, south and west sides.
If helping our community as a driver for someone fighting cancer sounds like your cup of tea, please contact Christine Hinds, program manager on Oahu at (808) 595-7504 or by email at christine.hinds@cancer.org
Mahalo and aloha nui.

College fairs worth the investment
I applaud Kip Goodwin bringing up the subject of the changing nature of the college fair on Kauai, and HACAC’s new involvement. While it is true that over 70 college representatives will be available at Island School from 9 to 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 26, this event is free and open to the public. Parents are welcome to attend. With each public high school sending three buses full of students, we anticipate well over 500 attendees.
While this is the first time that HACAC has sponsored the college fair on Kauai, they have been doing so on Oahu, Maui and the Big Island for years. HACAC is committed to serving Hawaii students as they make choices about pursuing post-secondary education.
The event organizers work directly with colleges to provide for their needs given their busy schedule, as well as meeting the needs of the community. There will be a counseling booth at the Kauai college fair where students can pick up information about college planning and financial aid.
In addition to the Monday morning HACAC college fair, the college fair organizers on Kauai have scheduled another free event at Island School on Sunday, Oct. 25 — a Selective College Admissions Panel Discussion from 4 to 5:30 p.m. followed by a reception sponsored by Lappert’s Hawaii from 5:30 to 6 p.m.
During the panel discussion, representatives from seven universities will discuss admissions policies, financial aid, tips on how to graduate college in four years and will answer questions from the audience.
All of the 72 college representatives have been invited to the reception following the panel discussion, giving Kauai parents and students additional personal contact time with college personnel. Again, this event is free and open to the public and we hope it is well-attended.
