KALAHEO — Waimea High School air riflery teams held off a strong challenge from Kapaa High School to sweep the boys and girls matches Wednesday during the final match of the Kauai Interscholastic Federation air riflery season at the Kalaheo Neighborhood Center.
Led by Khryshia Pascual, who fired a day’s high 249 (93 prone, 77 standing, 79 kneeling) points, the Menehune girls — who clinched the KIF division title earlier in the season — held off the Warrior wahine, 1,181 to 1,112.
On the boys range, Waimea’s Keane Caberto claimed high point honors at 245 (92-61-92) to lead the Menehune men to a 1,201-point showing over Kapaa’s 1,107.
Brooke Hornos, leading the overall individualist standings for the girls, fired off a 249 (94-73-82) to lead the Kauai girls to 1,145 points. The effort put them ahead of the Island School girls, who finished at 742.
Island School had only four girls, one short of the five teams use, but was led by Aliana Ho posting 216 (84-59- 73).
The Kauai boys, who won the KIF boys title earlier in the season, saw Alec Greer (87-74-86) and Brandon Marcos (88-76-83) tie at 247 points to lead the Red Raider to a 1,196-point total over Island School, who got 213 (81-61-71) from Scott Kilcoyne at the Kauai High School range.
“It was a wonderful way to end our season and honor our seniors — Alec Greer, Ryker Amimoto, Brooke Hornos, Krystle Pascua and Ryan Valhuerdi,” said Kauai coach Marcela Hornos. “Thank you to all of the schools and shooters for a wonderful season.”
KIF will send the winning teams to the Hawaii High School Athletic Association Civilian Marksmanship Program air riflery championships Oct. 27 at the Kamehameha Schools–Maui.
