LIHUE — Malama Kauai will be celebrating National Farm-to-School Month Oct. 18 with a Halloween party and fundraiser that features a canoe plant themed pupu menu, costume contest, silent auction, and entertainment, to benefit the Kauai School Garden Network.
The Kauai School Garden Network was founded in 2010 and supports all schools, pre K-12 on the island with technical assistance, volunteer support, fundraising help, curriculum training and gardening programs across the island.
The fundraiser will help to raise funds for its programs.
“It’s been an incredible year for farm-to-school programs in Hawaii,” said Megan Fox, director of operations of Malama Kauai, who manages Kauai School Garden Network program. “To have the importance of these programs be recognized by the state with allocated funding to support them is a critical step, but being able to see the impact we make on keiki’s health and self-sustainability at the grassroots level with these programs is what is most inspiring.”
This year, the state approved a Farm-to-School program and coordinator position within the Department of Agriculture.
With the support of the community and a wide group of partners, Malama Kauai helped install several new school gardens as well as harvested and delivered over 7,000 pounds of fresh produce to children and families across the island, among other things.
Tickets are $40.
