Theft dampens moon festival
Mahalo to Ching Young Village for sponsoring the Lion Dance troupe from Oahu this past Saturday. What made it extra special was the “keiki” lion following the adult one — elementary age students were being trained, copying the dance steps of their older members.
But auwe to the group of six to seven teen boys who stole the red offering envelopes off stores’ doors. These boys were perhaps 14 to 15 years old, riding skateboards, wearing baseball caps.
When I later saw two of them coming out of the grocery store I asked why they stole the offerings and where they were from. The teen answered that he did not take the envelopes but his friends did and that they were from the Eastside.
Parents, please ask your teen if they were in Hanalei this past Saturday and check if they have some extra money — some merchants were generous in their offerings. And please tell them to be aware that even if they did not take the envelopes they could be charged, too, because they were with the group that was stealing.
May we have more festive celebrations such as the mid-autumn Moon Festival and may we all learn to be respectful.
