KAPAA — Mahelona Hospital Auxiliary hosted its third cancer walk Thursday morning to pay tribute to those fighting the disease as well as celebrate those who have survived it.
Around 35 residents, many in wheelchairs, strolled along Ke Ala Hele Makalae to highlight the courage needed to battle breast cancer.
The event also helped usher in October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“We are here today to celebrate your courage, strength, and your perseverance to live life to the fullest,” said Josie Pablo, Mahelona Hospital recreation director. “Today is dedicated to all of you who are battling breast cancer, or any other type of cancer, or if you are a survivor. We commend you for your bravery, and we hope you will feel the love that we have for all of you.”
Pablo said the walk was created after several residents and staff members were diagnosed with cancer several years ago.
“This is for the residents,” Pablo said. “They wanted to do something to demonstrate their love and support for those who were fighting cancer. They wanted to walk.”
That desire brought forth the backing of the entire hospital staff.
Sgt. Major Ian Versammy of the Kapaa High School JrROTC had 17 of his cadets volunteering to push wheelchairs and help serve refreshments to guests following the short walk from the Kapaa Neighborhood Center to a point just past Kapaa Beach Park.
“This is a very special service project,” Versammy said. “I like this kind of project because it keeps the students humble and connected.”
Another cancer walk, hosted by the Kauai Committee on the Status of Women, will be at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday at the Moikeha Building in the Lihue Civic Center.
