Letters for Sept. 19, 2015
Sorry about cost of housing
We are visiting your beautiful island for our 40th anniversary. Kekaha was our choice to stay in a leased plantation cottage for a month. We have met friendly locals with beautiful smiles and hearts.
While here we have read the history of Kauai. We are saddened by the homeless situation here and the lack of affordable housing. This scenario has been repeated all over our world. The housing market is unaffordable for the sweet locals who just want to simply live.
We want to acknowledge that we do see this and are feeling quite guilty for contributing to that “system” by leasing this home for a month at an unattainable rate for most who call this home. We live on our Social Security and are 80 and 65 years old. We have worked hard all our lives. While we do not have a lot of resources, we do have a small home.
We will return from this trip mindful of our choices in the future. Thank you for your wonderful hospitality!
