Hanalei Elementary School Principal Lisa McDonald has been reassigned to the district office effective today, Kauai superintendent Bill Arakaki said.
Arakaki released a press release today:
“We are addressing concerns regarding the kindergarten and 1st grade combination class at Hanalei Elementary School. The decision for the combination class was made on August 20, 2015 to address the enrollment in both grade levels.
Rest assured, Hanalei Elementary School administration, teachers and staff are providing the best educational experience for all students. Additional concerns brought to my attention about the school and its administration are being looked into on a priority basis. Although I am unable to disclose specific details of my discussion, recommendations and actions, please know the matter is of high priority. Principal McDonald has been reassigned to serve in the district office effective Monday, September 14, 2015. Serving as the teacher in charge will be Elizabeth Steed, Student Services Coordinator on Monday and Tuesday, September 14 – 15, 2015. The temporary principal will be Ms. Reiko Beralas, Vice Principal from Kapaa Middle School on Wednesday, September 16, 2015.
As we move forward to refocus on the best interests of the students, staff and our Hanalei School community, I will continue to adhere to Hawaii Board of Education and Department of Education policies and procedures, collective bargaining agreements, and other personnel processes. It is my intent to resolve the matter as soon as possible.
Thank you for your patience and understanding. Mahalo!”
