A sign-holding demonstration protesting the decisions and leadership of Hanalei Elementary School Principal Lisa McDonald was held in front of the school for about an hour starting at 7 this morning.
Around 65 people lined the entrance to the parking lot. Some held signs that called on the administration to change tactics; others demanded McDonald resign.
McDonald is in her second year as principal of the elementary school. During that time, she has been the target of criticism for her decision-making and communication tactics.
The group voicing concerns about McDonald’s performance as principal is comprised of teachers, parents and members of the community. They held two open meetings prior to this morning’s demonstration.
McDonald said she knew about the protest and the community meetings, and that there were concerns about her leadership style. But she said she believed they were communicating and seeking ways to resolve differences.
“I thought we were working well together and that we were on a positive path,” McDonald said. “It caught me by surprise.”
