With over 300,000 people visiting Kauai’s 10 lifeguarded beaches in July, the Kauai Lifeguard Association’s third annual “Wave Ocean Safety Campaign” comes at a time where beachgoer counts are at an all-time high.
So far this year, the Kauai Ocean Safety Bureau recorded over 1.2 million beachgoers, 56,000 preventative actions and 2,500 first aid responses.
Dr. Monty Downs, president of Kauai Lifeguard Association, said “having our lifeguards fully prepared with necessary equipment at their disposal will assist in preventing drownings.”
The importance of the annual ocean safety campaign and KLA’s 3rd WAVE fundraising event was well received by the Kauai community.
The Oct. 17 concert is already sold out. The fundraiser includes live and silent auctions, prizes, and music by Hawaii’s top recording artists.
Kalani Vierra, director of Kauai Ocean Safety Bureau, said two beaches that need assistance are Poipu Beach Park and Hanalei Pavilion.
“To increase safety at our beaches, lifeguards need additional support,” he said.
Proceeds from the Wave Ocean Safety Campaign will go to purchase portable PA systems and battery operated megaphones to help maximize communication between lifeguards and beachgoers.
